Socials

Social evenings are held on the third Wednesday of each month except in December, where the Xmas calendar will dictate the socials. We meet in the upstairs room of a pub called The Devereux at 20 Devereux Court, Temple, London WC2R 3JJ (map).

Socialising starts in the pub from 7pm and the main event kicks off at about 8pm in the upstairs room.

Sometimes we have a purely social evening or a quiz night, but socials are talks and slide or movie presentations by outside speakers or talented club members on climbing and mountaineering related topics.

Outside social - BMC London & SE Area Meeting
Wed 12 Apr 2017

Come along to our next gathering of climbers and walkers in the London and South East area and get involved in the work of the BMC.

Date: Wednesday 12 April 2017, starting at 7.00pm

Area meetings are run by volunteers and are your chance to join in with debate and influence decisions about what happens in your area as well as the rest of the country.

A major talking point of the meeting will no doubt be the motion of ‘no confidence’ in the BMC Executive Committee, which will be voted on at the BMC AGM on 22 April – members can also vote by proxy if they won’t be attending the AGM. Simon Lee, our commercial partnerships manager will be at the meeting to talk about and discuss affinity partnerships, and hill walking development officer Carey Davies will also attend, to hear feedback from the last Mend Our Mountains campaign, and talk about plans for a follow-up initiative this year.

James McHaffie talk
Guest speaker for the evening is the super-talented rock climber James McHaffie, whose talk will roam far and high from new routing and UK trad to the big walls of Yosemite. James is also a BMC ambassador, and the BMC youth & partnerships officer.

All are welcome; food will be provided by the BMC.

Raffle prize kindly donated by Cold Mountain Kit

The wonderful world of natural navigation
Wed 19 Apr 2017

Tristan Gooley is an author and natural navigator.

Tristan set up his natural navigation school in 2008 and is the author of the award-winning and bestselling books, The Natural Navigator (2010), The Walker's Guide to Outdoor Clues & Signs (2014) and How to Read Water (2016), three of the world’s only books covering natural navigation.

Tristan has written for the Sunday Times, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the BBC and many magazines.

Tristan has led expeditions in five continents, climbed mountains in Europe, Africa and Asia, sailed small boats across oceans and piloted small aircraft to Africa and the Arctic. He has walked with and studied the methods of the Tuareg, Bedouin and Dayak in some of the most remote regions on Earth.

He is the only living person to have both flown solo and sailed singlehandedly across the Atlantic and is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation and the Royal Geographical Society. He is Vice Chairman of the UK's largest independent travel company, Trailfinders.

Tristan has appeared on TV and radio programmes in the UK and internationally, including The Today Programme, Night Waves, Countryfile, BBC Stargazing Live, Country Tracks, Ramblings, Open Country, Shipwrecks, The One Show and All Roads Lead Home.

Tristan will be giving a presentation on "The wonderful world of natural navigation"

Tristan blends natural science, myth, folklore and the history of travel to introduce you to the rare and ancient art of finding your way using nature’s own sign-posts, from the feel of a rock to a glance at the moon.

With Tristan’s help, you’ll learn why some trees grow the way they do and how they can help you find your way in the countryside. You’ll discover how it’s possible to find North simply by looking at a puddle and how natural signs can be used to navigate on the open ocean and in the heart of the city.

Of Mountains and Men
Thu 22 Jun 2017

Titled ‘Of Mountains and Men’, and with a foreword by legendary British mountaineer Stephen Venables, this book is a real life, detective-like quest to explore why climbing mountains for some is a search for their soul.

Author Mateo Cabello joins us to share his experiences whilst writing this book which tells the story of three Oxford students (William Bell, Ian McKean and James Ogilvie), killed together on the Matterhorn in 1948. Mateo was inspired to find out more about their lives, hopes and dreams. In doing so, he unearthed a story about passion and zest for life, which is what this book is really about, with post-war Britain as a background; a story that will resonate not only with climbers and mountaineers but in general with any person passionate about the great outdoors.

The idea was to combine this trek with an ascent of a 6000m peak. A small team lead by Zaheer set off in the summer of 2018 to achieve this goal... were they successful?

The journey took the team through stunning scenery and a strenuous walk on the longest glacier outside polar zones. An extension of the trip lead Zaheer to explore climbing opportunities in nearby areas.

Join us for drinks from 7pm and talk starts at 8pm

Psycho Vertical- Documentary Film Night
Thu 17 Oct 2019

'It was no longer about the joy of climbing, but simply the struggle of it' Andy Kirkpatrick

Join the LMC for film and pizza night. We will be showing a special screening of the fantastic documentary film by Jen Randall, based on the auto-biography of Andy Kirkpatrick. The film did the rounds at several festivals in 2017 and 2018, but we now have it available to rent for viewing together at the social.

Drinks from 7pm downstairs in the bar. Pizza and film upstairs from 8pm. The documentary is 1 hour 5 minutes long so plenty of time for post film beers to continue.

The pub has a simple food menu of bar snacks only, but we have permission to bring our own food. I am going to order some pizza, so if you want in then please email me on kathryn.sizer@googlemail.com with your dietary requirements, estimated max £10 per person for the pizza. If that doesn't interest you then there are a number of quick eateries nearby and the Devereux crew are more than happy to bring that in.

LIVE STREAM: Rock climbing in Quetta- Pakistan
Thu 16 Apr 2020

W. K. MARPLES and R. O. G. THOMSON wrote an article in The Himalayan Journal published in 1940 describing a number of climbs setup around Quetta by 'Quetta Slabbers'.
Among their many finds was a classic 1,500ft high multi-pitch route up The Grand Arête of Takatu , a twin peaked mountain with an altitude of 3,400m located to the North East of the city.
Zaheer visited Quetta in the Spring of 2019 with the aim to recreate the climb with local climbers. Was it a success? Join the live stream and find out yourself.

Virtual AGM 2020- Thursday 18th June from 7:30pm, with meeting start at 7:45pm
Thu 18 Jun 2020

The LMC committee have decided to hold the 2020 AGM in place of the March AGM date, which was cancelled due to lockdown restrictions.

This is the first time we will all gather online with so many people. Like any good day out on the hill, we appreciate your support to move at pace and stay focussed.

Questions to the committee:
In these uncertain times, the committee will be answering your questions. For ease on the night, please send questions in advance to secretary@londonmountaineeringclub.com

Committee reports:
All reports are available online ahead of the AGM and a short summary will be provided by each committee member on the night.

Election of the 2020 committee:
Hopefully you are aware that an emergency committee meeting held in March 2020 resulted in the use of Article 5(b) of the constitution, which allows the committee to fill vacancies or to co-opt members to the committee. The current committee can be found at https://www.londonmountaineeringclub.com/about-us/meet-the-committee, and the co-opted members are noted with an *

We will be voting on all committee member roles, and currently most committee members are standing for their roles again. However, nominations are open for all roles, for any club member to be nominated to.

Venue:
The AGM will be held using Zoom.

We look forward to seeing you all there. The Zoom room will be kept open afterwards for a catch up with light refreshments

PASSED LIVES & Avalanche Awareness Intro
Wed 17 Jan 2024

In 2002, 8 members of the London Mountaineering Club set off to Nepal to climb Tent Peak 5,695m in the Annapurna Sanctuary.

In the 21 years since then, 3 members of the expedition have passed away.

Tony Hamza retraced the route in 2023 to Annapurna Base Camp and, with the help of Buddhist monks at the Pema T'sal Monastery, paid tribute to those passed friends.

Avalanche intro

Some of our LMC winter cohort will share their experiences from training and the field in interpreting weather and avalanche forecasts for winter mountaineering. In perticular how to feed this into decision making in planning trips and when out in the alpine. And, most importantly, pointers on where to learn more with courses we’ve attended, talks, books and online.
