Participating in meets is what the club is all about. Meets are run by members, for members.
The club thrives by having members take an active interest in the meets that are run. To volunteer to steward a meet, or to suggest a new meet, please contact our meets secretary. The FAQ page offers advice on what to expect on a meet and guidelines for organising meets. Remember that if you have spotted potential for a new meet, the chances are high that others will also be interested!

MoreMarch madness is expecting good weather this early in the year.
Stay at the hut, walk, climb and generally make the most of a chance to escape the city.
MoreMEET FULL!
2 people on the waiting list already
5 Nights at the CIC hut situated at the foot of the North Face of Ben Nevis. The UK's premier winter climbing crag and home to a huge range of routes including many classics!
The hut is booked from the Sunday to the Friday morning so it's recommended to travel up on the Saturday and then use Sunday to walk up to the hut with food and gear for the week and ideally do a climb that day as well (if there's time).
The CIC hut is basic. It has a kitchen, toilets, running water and drying room, but no shower. For details on facilities, and the hut more generally, see https://www.smc.org.uk/huts/cic.
All gear and food needs to be taken up on foot from the Ben Nevis North Face Car Park which takes around 2hrs 30 mins and is a real slog. But once you're there, there are negligible walk-ins to all the climbs on the North Face.
Early march is typically a good time for ice routes on Ben Nevis so you're likely to get more out of this meet if you're happy on this surface and can climb at least Scottish grade III, but there are enough easier routes to fill a week also. This meet is not recommended for those that favour winter walking as options for that activity are very limited.
The cost of a bed in the hut is £24 p.p.p.n. The full cost of £120 is payable on sign up. Unfortunately due to high demand for the CIC hut in the winter season the Scottish Mountaineering Club cannot offer refunds in the event of cancellation. If you need to cancel your place then please find someone else to take it and transfer you the money.
Guidebook: Scottish Winter Climbs - SMC (available in paperback or to download on the Rockfax app)
Travel to Ben Nevis: The drive is about 10 hours from London and can easily be done in a day. Alternatively, using the sleeper train from Euston to Fort William plus taxis could work well if there were enough people doing this to share taxi costs. (NB - Sleeper train doesn't run on Saturday night)
More** Cancelling due to lack of interest **
A weekend of outdoor pursuits in the lush landscape of South Wales. Plus popular locations like Hay on Wye (for book and café lovers), and the beautiful River Wye itself are all nearby.
Accommodation is likely to be the Dinas Castle Inn bunkhouse near Talgarth, which will cost £30p/p per night including cooked breakfast.

MoreJoin me for a daytrip to Dorking on a circular walk of about 22 kms.
Ignore end date for meet, this is a day trip.
MoreYes, there's climbing in Shetland! Who knew? Have a look at this UKC article by Martin Kocsis to whet your appetite!
There is quite a lot of info on this site: shetlandclimbing.info
Whilst a lot of the climbing is on remote sea cliffs (which can be very committing if you have not done this before) there does appear to be climbing at all grades and a smattering of inland crags too.
Don't worry if sea cliff climbing is not your thing as there will be opportunities for walking and other activities as well (including possibly taking bikes with us).
We will be staying at Voxter Outdoor Centre. near Brae in the north of Shetland. This is close to where the majority of the climbing is.
Voxter is booked for Saturday night through to the Thursday morning. At that point the group are free to explore the island for two nights (Fri/Sat) until we return on the ferry on the Saturday night (3rd June).
As things currently stand (Feb 2023), the absolute cheapest way to get to Shetland will be by driving from London. With 3 people to a car this works out at around £200 each. Flying and driving (on a similar 3 per car basis) works out at around £675.
The current plan is to drive up on Friday 26th May to Aberdeen and then take the overnight boat arriving on Shetland on the Saturday morning. We will return on the Saturday night boat on 3rd June and return by car to London on 4th June.
Current plans suggest we have enough cars leaving from London to accommodate the whole group.
Please email the meet steward if you are interested and bookings will open in February.
MoreA week of mountain pursuits in the wilds of North Wales from our base at the club hut in Nant Peris.
We are also looking at engaging the services of some mountain instructors for beginner and improvers training — please email Laurence, the meet steward, via the link in the top right (email icon under his name in Booking Details) if 2–3 days of instruction would be of interest to you.

More details to be found in our champagne challenge discord channel.

Sea cliff climbing on the Dorset coast. Accommodation likely to be camping.
MoreIt's back! The LMC annual endurance weekend, the Champagne challenge has returned.
Start and finish from the hut climbing all 14 peaks over 3,000ft in North Wales. It is a monster day out, but there should be plenty of daylight. And complete the challenge in under 15 hours you'll get a bottle of champers.
A successful Champagne Challenge also requires team support to rescue the exhausted. Anyone interested in assisting, please let the meet steward know.
Fingers crossed for good weather, I chose the weekend closest to the longest day, which I'm sure we will need every minute of daylight ;)
sunrise: 4:43 am BST
sunset: 9:21 pm BST
duration of daylight: 16 hours 38 minutes
P.s. the hut can only house 16 people and the campsite is booked for an additional 10
MoreA one week trip to the Dolomites based around Canazei. Lots of trad / sport climbing, hiking, via ferratas and great food. Most likely staying in an airbnb.

Back for its 16th year!!!
Started by Ralph Hale back in 2008, the Gritstone Gallop follows in the great tradition of the Rock and Ice club who apparently used this event for their pre-Alpine training, in days of yore.
The 'Gallop' is about 12-14 miles in length, and is done entirely on foot (and hands!). It starts in the High Neb area of Stanage in the Peak District and ends at Birchens Edge, a route is climbed on every edge/crag on the way - 12 in total!
The full Gallop is a long day, finishing up in the Robin Hood Inn near Birchen and the campsite. But you're welcome to cut it short as you wish.
Your grade for the 'Gallop' is the lowest grade you climb in the day, and the more crags you climb, the more beers you are allowed in the Robin Hood Inn.... if you make it before closing time!

Since the meet became so popular I booked extra 10 spaces at the Ty Isaf campsite which is at the bottom of the road from Fronwydyr. They charge £10 cash per person per night and it booked under the name of Fronwydyr. So all reserved spaces will go there unless any of the people booked to stay in the hut want to swap. In that case please let me know in advance.
To pay for the hut, please visit the https://www.londonmountaineeringclub.com/basket. the link can also be found on our website under membership - payments - and choose the appropriate Fronwydyr bed fee.
On Saturday after all the outdoor activities on the hills we will relax after at our summer barbecue.

MoreSince The Gower was one of Bertie's favourite places and he loved stewarding the annual meet there, we've decided to remember him with a meet in his honour!
There is climbing at all grades in the Gower and it is particularly suited to trad newbies with some very good easy climbing right off the beach at Three Cliffs Bay. Tides are looking favourable (neap) with low tide at late morning.
We will be staying at the campsite at Oxwich Bay. The Oxwich Bay Hotel with a cafe/bar and restaurant overlooking the beach is a short walk away.
I've provisionally booked us 10 spaces at the campsite but I'll need to know numbers a week or two ahead and may close bookings early! So if you are thinking of signing up, please do so ASAP.
A visit to the South Coast for long warm days of sports climbing on Limestone.
After a hard day on rock it is customary to gather around the BBQ on Saturday evening and share the stories. The evening finishes off with the delicacy that has influenced the name of the meet.
Staying at Portland bunkhouse. £20,- PPPN
Spend a weekend enjoying the lakes and fells of Cumbria's Lake District.
We are going to be based in Ambleside on the shores of Lake Windermere, so an ideal spot for lakeside walks, wild swims and within easy reach of a host of climbs, hikes and scrambles.
Accommodation has been booked for those that had signed up prior to Saturday 2nd September. Others are welcome to join — the more the merrier — but will now need to find their own accommodation.
Join me for a circular day hike through Dorking, length about 22 kms.
The plan is to start at 9am sharp at West Dorking station (I could be persuaded to start earlier, if people are up for it).
There is off-street parking around West Dorking. Anyone coming from London via train will probably arrive at Dorking Main or Dorking Deepdene station - from there it is a shortish walk to West Dorking, but I am happy to pick people up.
The hike is long but not very hard - there aren't any overly steep sections and the paths are well maintained. A good portion of the walk is shaded. We will pass through absolutely stunning ancient forests and gorgeous hillsides with fantastic views.
The hike will take between 6 and 7 hours, depending on whether or not we stop off at a pub for a pint half way through :-).
I am using OS Explorer Map 146.

The hike will not be particularly hard - there aren't any overly steep sections and the paths are well maintained. I did a practice run of the hike last weekend, and unfortunately one of the paths is blocked by a huge fallen tree branch so I am working out alternative routing at the moment, but this may add 0.5 miles or so to the hike.
The hike will take between 4 and 5 hours, depending on whether or not we stop off at a pub for a pint half way through :-).

Weather forecast shows rain in the late afternoon, but I hope by then we are finished.
MoreNew members of the LMC are especially welcome on this meet, which will give new and existing club members a chance to climb together.
You don't need to be an experienced trad climber to come on this meet, but should at the very least be confident lead climbing and belaying indoors. Please get in touch with the meet steward (Adam) so we can arrange climbing partners before the meet based on experience and interests.
In terms of climbing gear, at a minimum you need to have a harness, rock shoes, helmet and belay device. If you need any equipment then please ask and we will try to borrow from other members.
The meet will be taking place in the Peak District, with plenty of easily accessible gritstone crags for all levels. Part of the group will be staying at Fallcliffe Cottage, and some at North Lees campsite.
MoreThe monthly meet at our club hut Fronwydyr. Activities on offer from the club include climbing, scrambling, trail running and hiking in the glorious mountains of Northern Snowdonia, with routes onto the Snowdon massif and the Glyderau range right from the door.

MoreSport Climbing trip to Manikia in Greece.
Manikia is a relatively new climbing area that has opened up in just the last few years. Only two hours drive from Athens, the area offers over 350 sport routes as well as trails for hiking and mountain biking. There are also at least five attractive beaches in the area.
The introduction of outdoor sports and recreation has revitalised the local economy and the area now offers a number of restaurants and lovely properties to stay in, plus a couple of very picturesque campsites.
Thankfully, the area had been untouched by the recent wildfires.
Accommodation An attractive house on the coast near Kimi has been booked for us for the nightly cost of approximately £21 per person. There is still room for 1 or 2 more should a last minute trip take your fancy.
Flights currently start from £90 return from London to Athens.

backpacking in Cairngorms National Park, Aviemore, Scotland.
This is intended as an introduction to winter hiking and backpacking. We are planning to stay in a shepherd’s hut, wild camp in a tent, and finally stay in a bothy.
None of the above luxurious accommodation options will be equipped with electricity or hot water. We will be cooking for ourselves too, and there will be no shops or pubs available. Oh, and no mobile phone reception either. :)
The focus will be on hiking, but there will also be the possibility of doing easy winter scrambling or climbing, with routes chosen according to ability and fitness. We could also add in a bit of hill running (if conditions allow) for those of you looking to get ready for the Frozen Champagne Challenge!
We expect to cover 20–25km, with an elevation gain of 800-1000m, each day whilst carrying all food and camping equipment — so this will not be a trip for couch potatoes!
The Cairngorm Plateau is well-known for its extreme and very changeable weather — the strongest gust ever recorded in the UK was 173mph on Cairngorm Summit!
Tents: You will need a suitable tent — sharing tents might help minimise loads.
Travel: Direct train from London King’s Cross on Thursday 7th, 12:00pm, arr Aviemore 7:26pm. Return from Aviemore on Sunday 10th 10:22am, arr King's Cross 5:49pm.
